Pick up from your hotel and transfer to Mombasa for a half-day city tour of Old Town, a unique area on the southeast side of the city inhabited by local, Arab, Asian, Portuguese and British settlers. Begin at Fort Jesus Historical Museum, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century to secure their safety on the east coast of Africa. It has a long history of hostilities and was used as barracks before being converted into a prison by the British Protectorate. It is now an important historical landmark and World Heritage Site and also home to the Mombasa Butterfly House, a paradise of colourful, tropical butterflies. As you wander along the narrow streets of Old Town admire the historic buildings and many fine examples of Portuguese and Islamic architecture as well as the old dhow harbour before browsing for antiques, spices and fragrant oils at the bazaar and market. Beautiful Hindu temples are noted for their stone carvings, and detailed images of Hindu gods while the giant "elephant tusks" commemorate the Royal visit of Princess Margaret to the city in 1957. Conclude at Akamba woodcarvers to buy souvenirs before returning to your hotel. |

Your day will begin on a tasty note as you hop aboard a dhow (traditional fisherman’s boat) for a hearty Swahili breakfast that dishes up the most sensational flavours out of simple ingredients and includes fresh tropical fruit. Once you have had your fill, your excursion heads off to the nearby Kisite Marine National Park where swimming and snorkelling can be enjoyed in warm, calm waters that support a treasure chest of aquatic creatures and, more often than not, pods of friendly and curious dolphins. This highly popular tourist destination is renowned for its clear water, colourful coral reefs and ideal snorkelling conditions year-round. After working up an appetite in the water you will feast on a seafood lunch on nearby Wasini Island, including shell fish, fresh linefish and local delicacies such as coconut rice, before returning to your hotel. |
